AT4W Movie: I'm Working On It

Soooo at Midwest Media Expo, I made a little announcement! Namely that I am working on an Atop the Fourth Wall movie. Here are the things I can tell you right now about the project and what I can't tell you:

1. I cannot tell you what the plot is.

2. I am planning on launching an IndieGoGo/Kickstarter for it... WHEN I'M READY. I decided to officially announce it to start getting some buzz and interest in it early, especially since I have a few more conventions this summer that I can talk to people about it.

3. I'm planning on filming it next year. Because of the amount of time it will take to film, edit, and put together the thing, it is likely that there will be no storyline next year. And that's actually fine by me, since the storyline I have planned out after the Machinations of Worms arc will be VERY involved, very difficult to write, and require a lot of time and preparation for me to get right and there's no way in hell I can do both at the same time.

4. The current stage of development is that there is a script for the movie. It is in its second draft and all relevant parties are reading it and offering me critiques/notes/refusals to have anything to do with me and my idiocy.

5. No, this project will not be on the scale of the Angry Video Game Nerd movie. It will be more equivalent to a TGWTG Anniversary film or the Cinema Snob movie, though centered mostly around AT4W.

6. Subsequently: yes, there are plans for other Channel Awesome producers to be in the film, perhaps even in major roles. Atop the Fourth Wall's storyline has always tried to keep itself strongly tied to the greater Channel Awesome "universe" (for lack of a better term) and the movie would be no different. However, the focus will be on characters of Atop the Fourth Wall for the most part and the other producers will help inform and advance these characters.

7. No, I will not tell you who is in it.

8. I do not know as of yet what the budget will look like for the crowdfunding. I first had the inspiration to work on this project last year and had hoped to film it in 2014, but that obviously is not happening. I got very busy with everything else around here. I'll be taking time during the summer to assess the various costs for what I'm working on. I wouldn't mind some helpful suggestions for groups in Minnesota who do set construction for independent films or something like that, as well as space that could house such sets.

9. I have not decided yet if the movie will be released online first or go straight-to-DVD. While potentially more profitable to go straight to DVD, there is certainly something to be said about keeping people excited about a movie's approach and immediate release that could work well in my favor. I'm open to insight from all about it.

10. I have not yet figured out perks for the crowdfunding. Signed DVDs or special edition DVDs are likely, but other things need to be decided upon later. I am, again, open to suggestions.

11. It will not be a prequel. Linkara's origins are documented in the first DVD.

12. It is entirely likely that all of these things I've talked about will change. I've probably got another year before I hit record for the first time on this and possibly even more if things end up falling apart unexpectedly (and when it comes to movie production, it most likely will).

In the meantime: start talking, start considering, and if you want to help, start telling me stuff to do. ‎

So it'll be an "AT4W" movie... but it won't have actual comic reviews, correct?

Chris said...

Before I faint of fanboy happiness, I would like to ask if there is the possibility of there being a sword duel?

John Pannozzi said...

Will there be any comic book reviews in it? If not, will there still be some kind of ribbing towards the comics industry and certain people involved in it (i.e., Liefeld, Miller, etc.)?

Man, I am so excited for this :D I can't wait to see what you have planned. I know it's going to awesome...

I am available to help if you need any help and I will definitely be one of the first to donate to the kickstarter/gofund when you get it up :D

Cory of PRIVATE Corp said...

Huh, I figure as much you might be working on something like this in the future, heck I was going to ask something about it when you were at Mythicon but I probably didn't ask it or forgot about it. Either way, I could say I call it, but it's still early to say so.

As far as promoting it, you could do what Brad does with some of his movies and do like vlogs, behind the scenes, deleted stuff, bloopers, teasers and trailers, what-not. Sure that is stuff you can add to the DVD, but still you are showing some stuff that's going on while making it, just to help boost interest. It may not work for you, but who knows?

Either way I am excited about this! Please be looking forward to whatever amount of money you'll be offering for not only the DVD, but whatever goodies you are going to come with it. I will guess that MTC-Studios will be having a huge part in the art department, I take?

I don't care who you get in the movie as long as you have ample screen time for you, 90's Kid, Harvey, Pollo, and of course...

Best of luck Linkara on the movie project. I know I'll end up buying it when it is made and/or giving money to said kickstarter... Well I hope to put money into the kickstarter.

"...it is likely that there will be no storyline next year."

I'm sure you'll get lots of people whining about this, but I actually prefer the non-storyline episodes. (I don't dislike the storyline parts, I just don't think they are necessary.)

Anonymous said...

Good luck - that sounds like a big (and exciting) project.

As a UK resident, I'd definitely prefer some kind of online release, even if it's VOD (i.e. if I have to pay for it rather than watching it free). Looking at your DVD, it costs $20 for the disk, then shipping costs $4.30 if I want it in 2-3 weeks or $56.74 if I want it in 1-2 weeks. Call me stingy, but I don't want to quadruple the cost of the disk just to get it a bit sooner; on the other hand, if I won't get it for several weeks then there's no sense of urgency, so I may as well put off that purchase until tomorrow. (Or the next day, or the next...) If I can pay money to watch it *right now* I'm far more likely to do that.

Do you get data about how many of your viewers are from other countries? That might help you to decide how significant we are.

Unknown said...

I completely onboard the idea. I've really enjoyed the story lines you've put together so far, so this should be just as good when it happens. For rewards, maybe signed comics you've reviewed, an exclusive backer-only episode of AT4W (or a lamp review), t-shirts (signed or unsigned, your choice), Comicron-1 crew ID cards (What?), among other things would be cool.

Unknown said...

When, in relation to storylines, will the movie be set? Post-Machinations, or in-between other arcs like To Boldly Flee?

And if you can't answer for fear of spoilers or for other reasons, that's cool^^

As for "stuff we want you to do"... Uh... Use Mirrorkara from that Star Trek Review in the plot?

...What? I like Mirrorkara. He's evil, humorous, and sorry Mirrorsano, his vest trumps your labcoat!

david page said...

you mention it being similar in scope to tgwtg anniversarys would you consider a similar release? ie online first then the dvd with all the bells whistles and cool stuff.

i will be there to be part of the kickstarter whenever it happens

Nicolas said...

Well, after other reviewers getting their own Movie, this had to come up at some point. I wish you good luck in getting funds for this grand-scale project.

It will be like a feature-length episode, minus the review. So only a storyline.

Don't answer if you think this would spoil too much, but: do you keep it to characters we've already seen on AT4W, or did you have to create a few more for this feature?

Anonymous said...

I would like to see Danny Chase and Lian Harper make a cameo.

Honey said...

I love your stuff and i would love to buy your movie. You're my favorite internet reviewer. Seeing a feature length film would be awesome

GoldenKing said...

That's really amazing, Linkara! Can I ask one small question about the plot? Will the story in this movie be a real connection to the AT4W plot at large? Or will it just be a sort of side story that is referenced from time to time.

The ClockWerk Critic said...

Wishing you the best of luck with the movie. If you need help with script editing or fact checking, I'll be willing to help in that area.

James said...

Awesome news! Hope you have all the best luck in getting stuff sorted and you can make something amazing!

The TGWTG movies are pretty awesome, I don't think you need to apologize for not being more expensive/flashy then them!

IMO, I think releasing it online would be better, but put stuff in the DVD... mebbe if you got a good amount on the crowdfunding, you could get a movie tie-in comic!

Also, just for the lulz, there should be a review (or two) in the movie. One of the funniest things in your plotlines is where Linkara stops to review, and everyone else gets to go "WHAT?!"

Unknown said...

Nice a movie.

Adam said...

*jawdrops* WOW! That is a bombshell, good sir!

Awesome news to hear, Lewis. If and when the Kickstarter/Indiegogo page goes up, I will do my best to help this project get funded. I do hope we get to see the likes of Nostalgia Critic, Spoony, and the Cinema Snob appear in this film.

As for perks, why not lithograph artwork from Alexander Tansley (aka MTC-Studios) or the artist behind the limited edition metal prints for when Doug Walker had his Indiegogo fundraiser? You could also hope a high dollar perk for one person to choose an episode (with some restrictions). Another for those who want a walk-on role for your movie. Or perhaps one perk where one lucky fan can take part in destroying that lot of finished bad comics like Marville and Avengers #200.

Whatever happens, we look forward to the latest news on your upcoming movie.

Unknown said...

May I be the first to say I can't wait to see what you cook up in terms of a movie. I've loved your story line shorts for years and can't wait to see what's next

doug.glassman said...

Semi-related to the other Channel Awesome producers bullet... you should consider working with Ryan Mitchelle and the rest of "The Cinema Snob Movie" production team. They did a really great job on that while having a really tight budget.

(That's sort of my roundabout way of saying "PLEASE let Brad Jones and company be in this!")

Mika said...

Ah, I'm really excited for this now!
When it comes to perks, since you already have a dedicated artist who works with you, you could make small plastic charms, stickers and buttons of your characters as small perks. Also posters of the movie and special edition t-shirts are things I often see, as well as a limited number of name drops or small cameos for high tier donors.

Please don't break anyone's neck in the final act.

The idea of a AT4W film is definitely intriguing. Looking forward to more infos as they become available :D

I'd also recommend that the DVD comes second. Releasing it online first sounds like the more fair way for a crowdfunded movie.

And does anyone know whether this "E-begging / Kickstarter is the spawn of Satan" fad is still going on? I'd hate reading about that stuff all over again in the comment section <_<

I would say release it straight to DVD, then put it up on the site a year after the release. That's my 2 cents if its worth anything.

Well, if we are going to offer help, we should have some idea of what you actually need. Extras? Props? Visual effects? Also, what time frame do you think you'll need the help? Later this year? Next year?

I don't think getting people to help will be a problem. Useful, timely help might be harder to wrangle.

Hey Lewis! I'm willing to help in any way possible. I'm currently a copy editor at a peer-reviewed journal and, before that, I was an on-air personality, producer, and news editor with a local radio station. If there's anything you think you'd need a hand with from someone like me, don't hesitate! I'd do it pro bono.

Patrick Carlock said...

Wow. Wish I had been at this convention. Congratulations on taking it to the big time! Here's hoping it's just as fun and interesting as the show is normally. Also, you've got me really excited for the Worms arc.

Peter W Dawson said...

It's a gimme, but if people donate a large amount of money you guaranteeing them a scene in the money seems like a popular move for film-related Kickstarters. Another high-ranking perk would probably be hang out with you, say at a convention or something where you don't have too much booked already. You obviously can't pay for them to show up but other kickstarters have gotten away with these kinds of rewards so I guess they're considered okay. Maybe for $5 guarantee that if people see you at a convention they can tell you they funded the film and get a high five? Then $10 they get their name on the inside of the DVD insert or something? $20 should be good for the DVD, $30 for a signed copy by you, and maybe $50 for a full cast signing or something like that. Another idea I've got is video messages: for a certain amount of money you'll record a short message thanking the person. Final one, and its another big reward one, is an executive producer credit. Not sure what their actual role in that regard would be but getting a personalized solo credit in the film and being an official rep of the film would be cool.

Oh yeah, and for something like $15 name in the credits?

Nate said...

WILL THERE BE A SEQUEL?

lol kidding. Considering i'd rather watch some of your extended reviews (One More Day in particular) then most movies, I'm pumped and ready to be a backer, especially if there is origin DVD's involved as perks.

Also, riddle me amazed Batman! This, cons, the MOW storyline, and the History of Power Rangers, you know how to fill up a schedule!

Doctor Black said...

Well Linkara, it's still quite a ways away, but still, figure I'd leave a name and youtube page for you.

I'm Doctor Black, and I'm an internet nobody. However, my martial arts youtube channel right now features some fight scenes(some older than others) that you might want to take a look at when you have free time.

I both choreograph and edit all of our fights, and I do have my own version of your second fight with Mechakara edited on my computer if you are interested. Not a recreation mind you. It's your footage, but in my style of editing for the fight clips.

Lewis Lovhaug said...

@GokuMartin: I have decided not to let your post through since I have absolutely no idea what the hell you're talking about in it and it seems like you are confusing some kind of fanfiction with things.

GokuMartin said...

To quote Doug: "Let me explain".

All your videos, all of Doug's videos, everything you guys make, is incorporated into the universe of my writings, the AwesomeTouhouverse.

Most of the stuff you do, your battles with Lord Vyce, with the Entity, your relationship with Margaret, everything has an impact on the deeper AwesomeTouhouverse.

You don't know it, but you are one of the most influential characters in the AwesomeTouhouverse. You are Nitori Kawashiro's best friend, and you speak to the Touhou Family on behalf of the Channel Awesome Family.

The Human Applejack is your sister, her real name is Megan Williams Lovhaug. She's a youkai, just like you.

The Human Fluttershy is Margaret's sister, and was Margaret's only living relative until Remilia bit her (in fact, Margaret used her infinite cosmic powers to stop Fluttershy's siring halfway through, so Fluttershy is now a dhampir instead of a vampire). Margaret stays around as "Flutterbat" 's sidekick and her moral compass, essentiallu filfilling the role of Whistler from the "Blade" movies.

Human Trixie is Angry Joe's niece, and a member of the Angry Joe Army

Human Sunset Shimmer is Brian (from "Midnight Madness")'s sister.

Human Rainbow Dash is Marzgurl's sister.

Human Rarity is Cinema Snob's niece.

The Human Cutie Mark Crusaders are the Angry Video Game Nerd's nieces.

Maven of the Eventide is the mother of Remilia and Flandre Scarlet, and she's also the wife of Dracula.

That team of Ghostbusters you met at a convention? They are the Ghobusters Next, a new team of Ghostbusters funded and mentored by Peter Venkman after the original Ghostbusters disbanded.

I've written entire stories about the "Kantai Collection", a group of female soldiers in World War who are all ancestors of you and the rest of the Channel Awesome Family (Fat Grandma is your maternal grandmother, your paternal grandmother was part of the Kantai Collection and dided fighting Remilia in World War 2). the Kantai Collection even encountered the Earth Allience (the evil empire behind "To Boldly Flee" and the Gunslinger's backstory).

Dolorem, Judas Liz and "Mirror Linkara" all come from a parallel universe called "Dimension X", which is where "Kickassia" took place.

Allen is the one who keeps the goverment from attacking youkais.

Alice McGee (the evil Alice from those videogames, who is a separate character from the Alice from Lewis Caroll's book and is in fact embroiled in a war with the book Alice for control over Wonderland) is the one who rebuilt and reprgrogrammed Mechakara in "To Boldly Flee", since the Earth Alliance promised her Wonderland in exchange for her services.

Patchouli Knowledge has Apollo Z. Hack's Revuer Unit stored in her vault.

I could go on all day, but the point is: everything you do or don't do has a huge impact on the shared universe I created in my writings.

Arc said...

Sounds nice. I was thinking for your Kickstarter other incentives you might add if they donate enough is perhaps some of your other products.

Like your DVD or perhaps a choice of one of your shirts or cybermat plushies while supplies last of course

Maybe for really big spenders you could offer to take on a comic book request or maybe even do a special like movie review or something for them.

In anycase it sounds good. Though I'm sure you can't confirm it, I also Hope Insano, Spoony, and Netureo make it in somewhere.

Tommy Black said...

"I could go on all day, but the point is: everything you do or don't do has a huge impact on the shared universe I created in my writings."

Thank you for the clarification. However, the blog is not here for you to talk about your fanfiction's writings, especially since the majority here probably are not aware of it nor know about what you're referring to in many cases. Please stick to the subject matter of any given post unless there's a tangent that is significantly relevant to the matters concerning the post. Thanks!

Fusionater said...

Interesting, I've got a few questions, hope you have the time to answer them. :D

1. Will it feature any of your past villains in major roles?

2. Is it possible with more casting options that you will cast others to play the characters of Harvey, 90's kid, and others?

3. Are you keeping this close-knit, or will you be doing open casting to fill some roles like extras or other characters you have?

4. Will the movie have an original soundtrack and/or be a musical?

5. Live action I presume?

6. If you can estimate, do you think you'll be ready to do an indiegogo/kickstarter b ythe end of the year(I recommend doing it after taxes)

That is all. ;)

Unknown said...

& it will still be better than anything Uwe & Tommy has put to film combined..

I haven't been this excited for a movie since Cinema Snobs movie. Now all I need is a Spoony movie and I will be in Fanboy heaven.

Fanboy squees aside, as much as I would like the online release first, I personally would rather you got your dvd payday first so you have that buffer for later.

Doing like Snob does and showing behind the scene and production logs would be cool. It would help keep interest in the movie ( not like you really need it from the look of things).

As for funding rewards, like others have said autographed comics, maybe some exclusive art work like the title cards from some of your personal favorite episodes, autographed copies of the first dvd, A "shiney" cybermat, and maybe as the top level the one person that gets it gets to chose a comic for you to review.

Hope this was helpful.

I've been trying to think of what you would do for a movie and can't come up with anything, which I think is good because when it comes to your stories, I LIKE being surprised.

Are you looking forward to filming places other than your apartment?

Are you going to need/want a uniform for on Comicron-1 that isn't Star Trek or will you just wear your Linkara costume?

Does movie budget mean moving arms for Pollo? Though I think he should modify the tech for the mobile emitter and have 'force' hands.

Am really excited for this. I would think it would be cool to release it in pieces online then a DVD with maybe deleted scenes or something but whatever is best for you is fine with me :)

Unknown said...

This could be extremely interesting, you are clearly a talented writer and it'll be fascinating to see your more serialised format transferred into a film. Also you have several iconic characters to give further development (I would like to see the Ninja Style Dancer given a romantic subplot and an emotional dilemma :]).

Chris Hewson said...

The AT4W characters are so fun and likeable, it's a shame they don't appear more in the show, so this really sounds like awesome news! It's great to know that they'll be getting more to do in this movie!.

GokuMartin said...

Also, for a (kind of) non-AwesomeTouhouverse comment:

I really hope this movie digs deeper into the Earth Alliance and into the Gunslinger's story arc.

First of all, it kinda saddens me that the Earth Alliance thing hasn't been explored. I mean, after "To Boldly Flee", they have every reason to go after Linkara (he pretty much killed his three main generals and sabotaged their plains of conquering this universe), and Linkara giving shelter to the Gunslinger gives them further motivation to go after Linkara. It's, I dunno, unrealistic that they would just forget about Linkara instead of doing everything in their power to destroy him.

Also, the whole thing with the Gunlinsger left many questions unanswered...are all those other magic guns merely guns that are magical, or are they vessels to ghost girls as well? What, exactly, was stopping Margaret from fighting back on her own (she's a Franklin Richards-like reality warper, she could have easily vaporized the Gunslinger with a wave of her hand. And unlike Phelous, she's aware of her powers)? Why isn't the Gunslinger trying to free his home universe, and if it's about the clock thingie, why isn't Linkara working on repairing it?

Furthermore, both Lord Vyce and the Earth Alliance are (for entirely different reasons) hellbent on conquering and/or destroying every alternate universe they see...how come they never crossed paths before? How come the Earth Alliance never tried to kill Vyce at any point? How come Vyce never mentioned the Earth Alliance to Linkara? In fact, shouldn't Vyce owe a debt of gratitude to Linkara, since Linkara killing the Earth Alliance's three generals (Zod, Terl and the Executor) and foiling their plans eventually helped Vyce in his goals (after all, if the Earth Alliance had suceeded in using the Plot Hole to conquer this universe, that would have been a wrench in Vyce's plans)?

I hope the movie sheds some light on all of this.

Lewis Lovhaug said...

...

"Earth Alliance?"

GokuMartin said...

Yeah, that's my name from the evil empire from both "To Boldly Flee" and from the Gunslinger's backstory. You didn't name it, and "To Boldly Flee" didn't name it, so I decided to name it, and "Earth Alliance" identifies the evil empire as coming from a parallel Earth.

Anyway, can we expect the movie to adress the questions I asked, or do we have to wait until the next storyline? Don't get me wrong, I love all your storylines and I'm really interested in what you do with the King of Worms, I'm just asking.

Lewis Lovhaug said...

In To Boldly Flee, that organization WAS named - the MPAAA - the Motion Picture Association of American Artists. It's a parody of the real-life organizations MPAA and RIAA.

And the one in Jaeris' home dimension was simply the government. And nope, not answering any questions relating to what the plot is. ^_^

GokuMartin said...

If you would like my opinion. I suggest that next you make AT4W every 2 weeks if you are preparing for a complicated storyline and a movie after that. It will probably help ease the stress.

I would still really like to know how the plot of this movie factors into the main storyline. Will it be important to the story or will it just exist in the continuity without anyone really needing to watch it. (Like how a Dragonball Z movie just exists without having a real bearing on the real story at large).

...so, a movie? that's cool.

yeah, I'm actually super-excited to hear the news (and annoyed that I didn't see the announcement sooner) and I can't wait to see what you have planned.

if you hadn't said you already had a script, I was going to offer a story idea I've been sitting on since Vyce returned in Pollo's body. my first plan was to make an AT4W "official" comic book mini-series, and I have the overall plot written out... somewhere... but as it stands right now, I have NO experience as a professional creator, and no real free time to get said experience, what with reality taking priority. if I sent you the overall summary (along with a donation, of course), maybe you could consider it for a future storyline or AT4W The Movie 2?

TheDeviot said...

Being a film about Linkara, and Co. I don't think any reviews should be in it. Rather just a self contained story about Linkara, and friends/enemies. I selfishly WOULD like to see the reference humor (Patton meme, Star Trek jokes, Power Rangers, TGWTG gags like Angry Joe fighting THE GODDAMN BATMAN. Maybe even a Masters Of The Universe reference for us old timers)that we do get in the weekly episodes. As far as ideas for the general story? Well you want to surprise us so there really isn't much as a fan I can suggest. Anyway, best of luck to you, I'll patiently wait for it to come out.

Please please please release it online, I'm not American and I just can't order anything online because of several reasons. Even your movie would not make exception to that but I'd really love to see it because you are awesome!

I think one of the more obvious perks should be a viewer requested Comic review for a donation of around 50-75, and an opportunity to be an extra in the movie itself at 300-500.

I absolutely dont mind paying, but, honestly physical mediums are a bit dead to me now. I got dozens of DVDs unopened on shelfs.

I buy them to support people, but they never get used. Its just a waste of resources, energy and money to make the things these days.
